Getting Ready To Go Camping
April was also when our troop started getting ready for our camping
trip.
Each week, we picked a topic and worked on it.
Sometimes we had some Junior Scouts from Troops 543 and 1414 come to
help.
We started by getting into patrols.
We had four, with four girls each.
Our Patrols were:
- THE FUNKY FOUR
- THE BEST CAMPERS
- THE BEARS
- THE PURPLE PRINCESSES
We learned lots of important camping lore:
-
We found out about some of the basics -
some are the "leaders" rules,
others are general camping rules.
-
Next, we learned about cleaning latrines.
Everybody's favorite job!
-
We also learned about sleeping bags,
bedrolls,
and what to pack when we go camping.
The following week, we learned about knife safety, and fire safety.
We practice with cardboard knives - that left a red mark on you
if you were not careful!
Then we built a fire in the cafeteria.
- We practiced striking stick matches.
- We even had an edible fire for snack.
- We explored different ways to prepare food on a camping trip.
- We thought some of them sounded really neat.
-
We learned the Girl Scout way to wash dishes in the woods.
-
We learned how to hang a drip line, and tied some different
knots.
