Thinking Day International Bazaar

Each year, our service unit holds an International Bazaar. Every troop picks a country to study and learn about. At the bazaar, the troop has a display about the country, and sells craft or food item from that country. The girls take their passport and visit each country to have the passport stamped and to buy the items sold.

This year, our troop represented Japan. We had a display with many Japanese items. We even devoted part of our display to Girl Scouts in Japan. (How about a camping silverware set with knife, fork and chopsticks!?)

Each girl who wanted to, had the opportunity to wear traditional Japanese clothing: Kimonos, robes and aprons. We also had hair flowers, and carried fans we had decorated to look like the Japanese flag. Our shopping bags were decorated with kirigami, the ancient Japanese art of cutting paper, which is similar to making paper snowflakes.

Our troop made origami star books to sell. When opened cover to cover, the pages make a star. Perfect for making wishes on a star, haikus or autographs.

The profits made at the Bazaar go to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. We donated $78.00 from selling our star books.

We also "Weighed our Friendship". Each girl got weighed, and added a penny for each pound. Our heavy troop (1000 pounds of Brownies!) added $10.00 to the Friendship Fund. WOW!
